An innovative way to boost your skin’s radiance.
Collagen induction therapy through microneedling is a safe, minimal down time, cost-effective adjunctive treatment for acne scarring, fine lines, overall skin tone and texture, large pores, stretch marks, and even alopecia. Microneedling with either the MTS Dermaroller Home System, or with the Rejuvapen in-office technology is an innovative way to boost your skin’s overall radiance and appearance on the face, chest, and neck, as well as addressing more problem specific issues such as scarring and large pores. It can also be used to improve delivery of topical skin care products deeper into the skin for increased effectiveness.
Microneedling is perfect for anyone seeking rejuvenation or improvement of their skin condition with minimal downtime and in a non-invasive manner. It is also a wonderful maintenance procedure to keep your skin glowing. Microneedling procedures create thousands of micro channels by puncturing through the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin. This temporarily micro-wounds the skin, which in turn stimulates the body’s natural mechanism to heal itself, resulting in a stimulation of growth factors that generates natural collagen and elastin production. This can also aid with fine lines, firming, and pigmentation. It has been shown to improve skin thickness and elasticity. This results in what is referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy.
At The Derm Institute, we offer both deeper in office Microneedling Procedures as well as home microneedling systems in our Skin Boutique.
In Office Microneedling
In office Microneedling at The Derm Institute is done with a combination of The Rejuvapen Automatic Therapy System and the MTS Microneedle Therapy System. These are both FDA-Approved devices that activate cell regeneration. In office, a topical numbing cream will be applied prior to treatment. Rejuvapen is the most powerful micro needle system that boosts collagen production with no downtime. It has a vibrating feature which increases patient comfort, and is small enough to reach delicate areas around the eyes, nose and lips.To optimize results, Dr. Chiu will customize in office infusions of platelet-derived grown factors (PRP), Vitamin A, Vitamin C, as well as stem cells and growth factors to be used with your microneedling treatments. Physician grade peels can also be applied after microneedling to further optimize results.
At-Home Maintenance Microneedling
Home Microneedling is a great option for anyone who wants to take their anti-aging skin regimen to the next level, or to act as an adjunct for in-office laser treatments for the treatment of acne and other types of scarring or stretch marks. Optimal treatments for any skin condition often requires a combination of in-office treatments and home maintenance.
At The Derm Institute’s Skin Boutique, we offer the MTS Home Dermaroller, made from Lexan Polycarbonate Resin. Unlike other dermarollers on the market, the MTS home dermarollers will not warp, as the axle of the roller is stainless steel and the device includes 200 fine needles made from Swedish surgical stainless steel. Additional benefits to this technology is that it is a low cost but high result product. The MTS System is the system shown in clinical trials to improve acne scarring comparable to fractional laser when treated at 2 week intervals . The use of the dermaroller allows for the epidermis to remain intact and otherwise undamaged. It is a great adjunct to non-ablative laser treatments as well as in office Physician Grade Chemical Peels. Dr. Chiu will prescribe a home skincare regimen which utilizes the micro-channels created by the MTS system to improve penetration of serums, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C 1000x to boost collagen induction.
Common Questions:
What is Microneedling used for?
Microneedling has been show to improve fine lines around the lips (“smokers lines”) and eyes (“crow’s feet”), acne scarring, stretch marks, alopecia, overall skin texture and tone. It is great for maintenance or in-office treatments for skin rejuvenation. For those looking to get the most out of home skincare products, microneedling also increases penetration of active, collagen building ingredients.
What is the difference between the in office and at home treatments?
Microneedling at greater than 1mm in depth is done under a physician’s supervision in a clinical setting. Topical numbing needs to be used for comfort and higher depths require sterile instruments for safety. It is common patients get Microneedling in office at a deeper depth, or laser treatments, and follow it with at-home microneedling.
Is it painful? What is the downtime?
In office procedures are comfortable as the skin is numb. Both in office and home treatments feel a bit prickly. Immediately after the skin is only very mildly sensitive. Some pinkness is normal. Often the area immediately feels smoother after infusion with skincare nutrients.
How long before I see results?
Because it takes 60-90 days for cells to turnover and collagen to be produced, it is typically 3-6 months to fully realize the improvements with these procedures. Continued improvement may be seen as the collagen thickens.
What areas of the body can microneedling be done?
Microneedling can be done on the face, neck, or body. It is particularly good for areas like the fine lines around the mouth, prominent pore areas or acne scars.
How often do I have to microneedle?
In-office treatments are suggested at 2-4 week intervals for a period of 3-6 months. At home treatments are recommended around 3-5 days per week.
